About GIC Demo
Welcome to the GIC demo. The purpose of this public online tool is to demonstrate the basic characteristics of geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) in power grids.
The demo contains five examples of how GIC can flow in a power grid:
- GIC in the whole grid.
- GIC in substations (transformers grounded to Earth).
- GIC in the whole grid when an individual power line is removed.
- GIC in the whole grid for different ground conductivity.
- GIC in the whole grid for different earthing resistance.
In the demo we have applied the model of the Finnish 400 kV power grid which was valid in 1978-1979. Although this grid has only 17 nodes, it has a sufficiently diverse structure to illustrate all fundamental features of GIC.
